Protein Is Crucial For Fat Loss! – Part 1 I Didn’t Realize How Important Protein Was For Fat Loss Until I Discovered Something That Blew My Mind…

The year was 1992. I had just finished a long cycle of weight gain whereupon I had moved my bodyweight up from about 150 pounds to about 215 pounds. And let me just tell you, it wasn’t all muscle!

I hadn’t been all that careful about my diet previously but I thought I knew pretty well what I was doing. It was time to lose some of that fat.

The first thing I did was make the biggest mistake a dieter can make: in my focus of trying to eat only low fat foods, I unwittingly and drastically reduced the amount of protein that I was eating.

The result? I lost weight and plenty of it. The problem was, I lost mostly muscle! I was smaller, weaker, lighter and nearly as fat as I was before. Not quite the results I was looking for.

In retrospect, I know exactly what I did wrong and it’s something I’ll never do again.

I FORGOT ABOUT PROTEIN!

Protein is an extremely important nutrient whether your goal is to lose fat, gain muscle or just tone yourself up. It is the main structural nutrient in your body, making up the bulk of your muscles and organs. Protein is essential for proper hormone function and immune system health.

Most importantly, for our purposes, protein is used for building and repairing muscle tissue.

When you are trying to lose fat, you reduce your calories. Unfortunately, your body views fat stores as more precious than your muscle tissue and will tend to eat up muscle tissue before it goes to fat for energy. This physiological adaptation used to protect our ancestors from famine but works against us now.

This is very unfortunate because muscle tissue is a great calorie-burner. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn even when you’re doing absolutely nothing! Protecting your muscle tissue makes fat loss so much easier, it will amaze you. Not only that, it will help you keep that fat off permanently!

What can you do to protect your muscle tissue?

The first thing you can do is exercise. Exercise, especially resistance training, provides a stimulus for your body that sends it a signal saying “keep this muscle, you’re going to need it.”

The second thing you can do is provide your body with enough protein. This can be in the form of food or supplements.

Good food sources of protein include chicken, fish, eggs, lean meats, legumes (beans), soy, and dairy products. Protein supplements are derived from food sources but are concentrated for convenience and effectiveness.

How much protein do you need?

The standard recommendation for athletes is between 1.2 to 1.7 grams per kilogram of bodyweight per day (or 0.5 to 0.7 grams per pound of bodyweight per day), though some research indicates a ratio as high as 2 grams per kilogram of bodyweight per day (0.9 grams per pound) is beneficial. This means if you weigh 150 pounds, you should try to eat between 75 and 105 grams and up to around 135 grams of protein per day.

Essentially, you should experiment with your protein intake to find out what works best for you. As far as importance in your supplement program goes, I would rank protein as next in importance to a good multi-vitamin.

When I made my first grand attempt at fat loss, I made the mistake of neglecting protein and it cost me. Don’t make the same mistake I did!

———————————

Protein Is Crucial For Fat Loss! – Part 2

How to Maximize The Results You Get From Your Protein Powder. Timing Is Everything!

Whether it be for fat loss or muscle gain, I always recommend taking a good protein supplement. The reason for this is simple: it is a convenient way to get high-quality protein without excess calories.

Be aware, however, that in no way am I advocating that you live on protein powder (like the dangerous Liquid Protein diets that used to be popular) alone. The key point to understand here is that a protein supplement is exactly what the name suggests: a supplement. It should be taken in addition to a nutritious diet in order to achieve a certain purpose, in this case increased protein intake.

Protein powders and protein bars can also be used as meal replacements on occasion, especially when you are on the go. They are far more nutritious than a fast food meal and more convenient.

The most popular and highest quality protein powder is whey protein. Whey is very digestable and is used efficiently in the body.

You can maximize the effects you get from your protein supplement simply by knowing exactly when to take it. Here is a list of the when, why and how of effective protein supplementation, ranked in order of importance.

1. Immediately After A Workout

If you only take protein once per day, this is the absolute best time to take it. Immediately after you finish your workout, your body needs raw materials to rebuild and recover with. If you don’t supply the raw materials through eating, your body will break down muscle from elsewhere in your body in order to rebuild the damaged areas. This is very counterproductive as you can well imagine.

By taking in some protein (20 to 30 grams or so) within minutes after exercise, you provide your body with the raw materials it needs to recover without breaking down it’s own muscle tissue.

2. An Hour After A Workout

About an hour following a workout, your body has settled down from the excitement and is ready to really start rebuilding. The protein that you took in immediately following the workout has been metabolized and your body is looking for more. Another protein shake at this time is a good way to help speed recovery. Try to take in another 20 to 30 grams about an hour after working out.

3. First Thing In The Morning

Immediately upon waking, or as soon after that as you can manage, take a scoop of protein powder. Your body has just been through an (approximately) 8 hour fast and is hungry for nutrients. Feed your body!

Protein powder is more quickly assimilated than solid food and gets into your muscles faster. This protein shot gives your metabolism a boost, which can help with fat loss. Be sure to follow it with a good breakfast, of course.

4. Last Thing At Night

Prepare your body for the long overnight fast by giving it a little something to work with. A good combination for this purpose is to mix a scoop of whey protein in with a small glass of milk.

Whey is what’s known as a “fast” protein, meaning that it’s digested quickly, while milk protein (casein) is what’s known as a “slow” protein, meaning it’s digested relatively slowly. At night, you want your protein to be metabolized slowly so that your body gets a more even supply over the course of the night. By mixing “fast” and “slow” proteins, you get the benefits of the higher-quality whey with the slower digestion time of the milk.

5. In-between Meals

A quick protein shake can be a great snack in between meals. It helps keep your body supplied with protein all day long. This is especially useful if you tend to have long periods of time in-between meals. It could mean the difference between losing muscle and building or keeping muscle!

6. With Meals

Taking a protein supplement with meals is a handy way to increase the protein content of a meal. This is perfect for when you make a meal that is somewhat low in protein.

7. In The Middle Of The Night

This is a trick that bodybuilders sometimes use in order to keep their muscles supplied with protein throughout the night. Keep a pre-mixed protein shake right beside your bed. Although some trainers have been known to set alarms to wake up to drink it, I prefer to have it there waiting just in case I wake up, but I don’t try to wake up on purpose. If I don’t wake up, it’s right there ready for me to drink first thing in the morning! This strategy is more targeted for muscle growth rather than fat loss.

WARNING!

Never drink a protein supplement immediately before working out!

Some people do this thinking that it will give them an energy boost or give them a head-start for post-workout recovery. Basically, all it does is sit in their stomach and bloat them up. Valuable blood that should be going to working muscles gets sent to the digestive system to try and digest it. The same warning goes for taking protein during a workout. Don’t do it!

By following these protein-intake recommendations, you will increase the effectiveness of your supplementation. Even if you choose to take advantage of only one or two of these timing techniques, you will certainly see an improvement in your recovery ability.

———————————

Protein Is Crucial For Fat Loss! Part 3

The Best Protein Powder and How To Get It Dirt Cheap!

Without a doubt, whey protein is king when it comes to protein quality and digestability. Ironically, whey used to be considered a useless by-product of cheesemaking and was just dumped into ponds as waste!

There are two main classifications of whey protein, which are essentially based on how processed the whey is. The two forms are whey isolate and concentrate. The major difference between the two is that whey isolate is more processed and is thus a purer source of whey. Whey concentrate is still a very high quality protein however.

If you have the money to spend, whey isolate is the higher quality protein. If you’re looking to get the most protein bang for your buck, I’m going to let you in on a little secret:

Whey concentrate is very nearly as good as isolate and is a whole lot cheaper!

I would compare it to driving a sports car. Imagine whey protein as the Ferrari of protein. It is a top-quality protein and a top-quality car. If you put a manual transmission into that Ferrari, you are going to get more performance out of it. This is what happens with whey isolate as compared to whey concentrate. Whey concentrate is your basic Ferrari, while whey isolate is your souped-up Ferrari.

My favorite protein supplement, which I always recommend to clients and friends, is the EAS brand whey concentrate protein powder called “Simply Protein.”

EAS is a very high-quality, well-known brand name and is a pioneer in scientific supplement development. They know their stuff!

But here’s the best part…

I know an online store where you can get this protein powder at a fraction of the price you would pay at a regular retail store. Let me throw some numbers at you.

For 2 pounds of whey isolate you will generally pay anywhere between $29.95 and $39.95.

For 10 pounds of EAS whey concentrate at the online store I will tell you about, you will pay only $49.95 (as of Nov 22, 2002). For this exact same brand at a retail supplement store, you will most likely pay around 35 to 40 dollars for only a 5 pound tub of it.

When you break down the numbers, it looks something like this:

Whey Isolate: $15 to $20 per pound EAS Whey Concentrate Retail: $7 to $8 per pound EAS Whey Concentrate Online Store: $5 per pound

I’ve been using and researching protein supplements for the past 12 years and I have yet to find a better deal on this high a quality of protein.

Use this link and go get some today!

http://www.fitrx.com/fitrx/fitrx_result.asp?operation=Find&i_pagesize=10&ref_franchise_id=17392&i_desc=simplyprotein&i_brand=34

p.s. the best part is they only charge a flat rate of $5.95 for shipping regardless of the size of your order. You could order 40 pounds of protein and still only pay $5.95 for shipping! (Actually, if you ordered over $200.00 worth, your shipping would be free!)

8 Ways to Fall in Love with Fitness

No, it’s not impossible. You can fall in love with exercise instead of having that dreaded feeling every time you lace up your sneakers. The trick to falling in love with fitness is finding something you love to do, and trying new things because you may discover a dormant passion for line dancing, snow shoeing, or even something as exotic as fencing. It’s time to uncover your inner athlete and fall in love all over again!

Balls, Bosu and Barrels – If you were the kid who was always climbing the monkey bars and ropes at the park, you’ll have tons of fun getting fit with these fitness tools. Exercise balls can be used for all kinds of abdominal exercises, a Bosu is a neat device for balance training and core stability exercises, and you can use a small barrel for practicing Pilates – all in the comfort of your own home. So next time your at the park with your kids, they’ll be chasing you on the monkey bars!

Square Dancing – This energetic style of dance may look strange to you – but it’s great exercise – and great fun! This folk dancing tradition has existed in Canada for hundreds of years and has maintained its popularity as a social activity often deemed “friendship set to music.” Now this form of dance is even more popular as people are doh-si-dohing their way to being fit! Don’t knock IT before you try it! You may forget you’re getting fit because you’re having so much fun!

Snowshoeing – Snowshoes are thousands of years old, and Native Canadians used to use snowshoes as a form of transport. Only in the last century has snowshoeing become a recreational sport. Now, Canadians across the country are strapping on their snowshoes and heading for the trails to spend some time outdoors, at one with nature, while boosting cardiovascular fitness and toning their backsides. Today’s modern snowshoes are typically lightweight, aluminum frames with fabric decks and strap bindings as opposed to the classic bent-wood frames crisscrossed with rawhide strips. In recent years, many celebrities have talked about the physical benefits of snowshoeing, especially when it comes to toning your glutes and quads.

Snowshoes are inexpensive compared to skis and snowboards, and snowshoeing is not a difficult sport, but don’t let that fool you into thinking you are not getting a good workout. Using poles, whether specially designed for snowshoeing or made for cross-country skiing, they will help you maintain balance and give your upper body a good workout too, especially when you’re doing some intense climbing.

Buddy Up! – It’s no secret that having a fitness buddy helps get you going. Let’s face it, when your doorbell rings at 6 a.m., you’re not going to hide under the covers and ignore your buddy. Or, when your work buddy grabs you for your daily lunchtime power walk, you’re less likely to sit at your desk and graze. A workout buddy provides a little extra incentive to get you going, and a little less response time to say no to exercise!

Feel Good in Fun Clothes! – Remember the old adage about how when you look good, you feel better? This goes for the gym too. If you buy yourself some fun fitness clothes that you feel good in, you are more likely to have more confidence in yourself and as a result, push yourself harder at the gym. Stores like Winners and The Bay offer great deals on workout clothes that are able to stand up to any fitness test. Remember, if you look the part, you’re more likely to feel the part!

Bring the Outdoors Inside – So what if the temperature is way below zero and the wind chill is making you shake like a leaf. Quit lamenting warm days gone by, and bring your beloved outdoor sports indoors. Shed all your layers, and find an indoor rollerblading rink, grab your tennis partner and hit your local tennis club, climb the rock wall at your local YMCA, hit a spinning class, or throw on your bathing suit and swim laps at your local pool. Create your own warmth, and you won’t be missing those days any longer.

Position Yourself Properly – Sometimes watching others can give you just the boost you need to get going at the gym. Look around you and position yourself next to someone who inspires you and watch yourself take off! You’ll soon be running to keep up with them…

Take Your Toddler With You– Most mothers never know when they’ll be able to squeeze in a little exercise time while running their kids around all day. Nowadays, many gyms have daycares, but if you don’t want to leave your children, you can exercise with them! Of course, you can run around outside all together, play in the snow, and build snowmen. But, if it’s too cold, why not try a kid-friendly Pilates video? Most companies which sell Pilates videos have kid-friendly ones too. Your kids will have a blast getting fit with you while trying all those fun exercises!

How to Take A Sauna

With the recent popularity of far infrared saunas and steam saunas comes the necessity of learning to use them properly and safely. Listed below are the traditional steps the Finns would take in order to benefit fully from their cleansing saunas. And the Finns should know, as roughly one in five inhabitants possesses a sauna.

It should be stated that one should consult their health care practitioner before embarking on any kind of sauna program, though it’s interesting that sauna usage doesn’t seem to harm the five million plus Finns and many others who know how to take a sauna correctly.

How to Take a Sauna – Traditional Finnish Style

1. First of all one should disrobe completely before entering. It is also important to remove watches, rings and all other jewelry because the heat of the sauna may distort the metal and burn the flesh that wears it.

Contact lenses and glasses should also be removed, as should dental plates and the like. It is common to wear kick-off sandals to walk into the sauna though these are usually left on the floor and never used when on the benches. In the old country, sandals were not used, but instead a bowel of water is placed inside the sauna on the floor and the feet are dipped in this as one enters.

2. Hikoilu – When entering the sauna for the first stage, it is important to remember that there will be at least two levels of benches – the high bench is always the hotter, and the corner of the room diagonally opposite the stove is always the hottest.

This stage is a dry heat where the outside cares of your life can be discarded and the mind and body refreshed. By tradition hikoilu is invariably a period of silence and lasts about 10 to 20 minutes.

3. Vilvoittelu – When a heavy sweat has been reached – one can hear the perspiration dripping down to the floor – this next phase of “vilvoittelu” has been reached and one can then leave the sauna. Traditionally users have sought a cool place of any kind like a swim in the lake or pool, maybe a cold shower, a roll in the snow, or just a bucket of very cold water. Some people simply sit down in the cool outside air. Instinct will tell you when the correct time comes to return to the hot room, usually when the heartbeat returns to the regular rhythm. Both the heat and the cold produce a slight increase in the rate of the heart beat, but this adjusts quickly to normal in healthy people. If there is a pounding or feeling of faintness, the person must leave the heated room and sit quietly. Drinking water with electrolytes would prove helpful also as well as fresh fruit juice.

4. Vihtominen loylyssa – This is the second session inside the hot sauna room. Traditionally birch twigs were heated in a bowel of warm water near the stove and the bathers sitting on the benches would use them to beat their bodies back and front to release the oil from the leaves and to open the skin’s pores.

Perhaps in modern situations, a dry skin brush would prove helpful before one’s sauna session to open up the pores and remove dead skin cells. This third stage lasts about 10 minutes followed by a second cooling off before proceeding to the next step.

5. Peseytyminen – One brings a bucket of cold water, soap and scrubbing brushes into the sauna and scrubs the body. Traditionally, people would pair off to scrub each other’s backs.

6. Huuhtelu – This is a longer session outside, rolling in the snow, a long swim or a washing with shower or buckets in the coldest water available.

7. Jalkilammittely – A fairly short warm up in the sauna which is usually followed by another short swim, dip or shower. Always finish with the cold, but not for a long exposure.

8. Jaahdyttely ja kuivattelu – This is an air bath for cooling and relaxation. Generally, except in harsh winters, one dries with a towel only the hair and back of the neck; after a good sauna the body can dry itself and adjust naturally to any temperatue without difficulties or harm.

The Finns really know how to take a sauna, you say? You may notice that a sauna is far from being another steam bath. The idea is that enough water is used to keep the hot, dry air from drying eyes and mucous membranes, but this depends upon the host. In Northern Finland, it was a social status symbol to be a man who could take a lot of hot steam and smile about it.

Today this information about how to take a sauna may sound old-fashioned or impractical but in a few localities it still works and works well. The same principle of cleansing impurities from the skin can be found in aromatherapy portable steam saunas that come in convenient home or office structures like these: Portable Steam Saunas

Also, far infrared saunas have become popularity because of their ability to penetrate deep into the sweat and sebaceous glands to remove toxins. Some of the higher quality models are discussed here: Far Infrared Saunas

Sun Protection Isn’t Enough!

Is the sunscreen you’re using truly good for your skin? Does it give any benefit beyond protecting from sunburn? Dose it moisturize, revitalize, and nourish your skin? Is it right for your face? These might seem like silly questions. Sunscreen protects us from the harmful affects of the sun. It prevents sunburn and helps us tan. But shouldn’t a product that we’re going to use all over our bodies do more than just guard against sunburn?

Colose cosmetics of Switzerland produces a fantastic line of natural Sun care products that moisturize and nourish your skin while protecting you from the harmful rays of the sun. The first of which I’ll introduce to you is Sun Gel SPF 19. This amazing, essential product starts to work its magic the moment you put it on your skin, giving sun protection and youthful radiant skin. The gel base feels nice and light on your skin, not heavy, sticky, or greasy like regular sun screen. It contains coffee extract, which is a natural sun filter and blood circulation stimulant. The increased blood flow brings vital nutrients to your skin. This supercharges your skin cell metabolism, aiding in the production of healthy new skin cells. The increase in nutrients can also boost the development of Collagen. Daily use will help to keep your skin young fresh and healthy all year round. You’ll see a reduction in lines in the skin, improved texture, and your skin will have a healthy radiant appearance.

For your pre-makeup sun care treatment use Tinted Sun Cream SPF 15. Your skin will just love it! This lightly tinted sun cream gives an instant healthy appearance to the skin. As an added benefit, it makes an excellent makeup foundation (even in the winter), thus eliminating the need to weigh down your skin with both a sunscreen and a foundation. And since it’s made for full body coverage, you can use it to give your skin a little color during the winter months. It contains Shea Butter, which softens smoothes and moisturizes the skin while reducing the signs of ageing. It also contains Vitamin C and Vitamin E, two major anti oxidants. They help prevent skin cancer, reduce wrinkles by adding with Collagen synthesis, and improve skin texture. There is also a version of the cream called Bronze sun screen SPF 15, that gives a healthy, natural sun bronze appearance to the skin.

For sensitive skin, without the added color, try Sun Protection Milk by Colose. It comes in SPF 4 (for light or year round protection), and SPF 15. It’s ideal for sensitive skin, and also contains vitamin C and E. Its waterproof, so it stays put, but it won’t hurt to have someone add a little extra when you think you need it.

So we’ve covered your face and the rest of your skin (literally),but what about your lips? Lotions, gels, and creams aren’t usually meant for ones lips, but lip balm with sun block can provide ideal protection for your lips, and the vitamin E in it provides ideal lip nourishment. Lip color can be applied over the lip balm.

Now you’re all ready to lie out in the sun and work on your tan. But, if you’d rather spend your time doing something a little more….interactive, or if you just want to get a good head start on tanning, then try Colose’s Self Tanning Emulsion. It gives an even, natural looking, brown tan after approximately two hours, with no tan lines, and works all year round. Enriched with vitamins and mineral oils, it won’t dry out your skin. You’ll look good, and others will definitely want to touch……

Once your day is done, remember that Skin care doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. After a day of fun in the sun, treat your skin with Colose’s After Sun Skin Care. This luxurious body lotion contains collagen and Aloe Vera. It moisturizes and replenishes your skin, helping it recover from the harmful affects of the environment. Having your special someone slowly apply it to your entire body can be a wonderful beginning to a sensual evening.

And finally, while caring for your skin you want to make sure to maintain your hard earned tan. Using After Sun Gel will extend the life of your tan while keeping your skin soft, beautiful, and kissable.

Lung cancer is a major killer of men and women across the country. Air pollutants, secondhand smoke, cigarette smoking especially, and other causative factors contribute to the disease.

Most of us think that the lung cancer is mostly common among the cigarette smokers and it is true that the vast majority of cases are or were smokers. But there are non-smokers do get lung cancer and smokers who don’t get it.

Signs of lung cancer are often not apparent in the early stages. However it is better to identify lung cancer as possible.

The most common early symptom of lung cancer is haemoptysis (coughing up blood). Consider this early symptom a warning sign of a cancer, which may be curable.

If you find that you are coughing up blood, you should immediately contact your doctor , especially if you are 40 years of age, or older, with a long-term smoking habit.

Some of the primary signs include:

* Hacking, persistent cough * Coughing up blood * Shortness of breath * Wheezing * Chest pain * Lost appetite * Lost weight * Recurring bronchitis or pneumonia

The above symptoms also being the symptoms of many other lung problems, so it is always advisable to see a physician to ascertain the cause

Secondary signs of simple cell lung cancer include:

* Weakness * Difficulty swallowing * Changes in nails * Hoarse or raspy voice * High fever * Swelling of facial features

It’s true that most symptoms of lung cancer do not show themselves until the disease is in its advanced stages.

However, sometimes people exhibit signs early in the disease’s development. It is imperative that the first notice of symptoms or concern sends you straight to the doctor.

The sooner treatment is begun, the better. A cure is possible if caught early enough and, if not, then a better quality of life and more of it.

When lung cancer spreads to other parts of the body, organs and bones, referred to as ‘metastasizing’, signs and symptoms include:

* Aching and sharp bone pain * Changes in the brain that exhibit themselves through weakness, numbness, dizziness, and seizure * Jaundice (whites of eyes, nails, and skin yellow) * Masses near the skin’s surface * Headaches * Numbness and loss of sensation in your extremities

All of these signs and symptoms of lung cancer may be caused by other health problems. The only way to know for sure is to consult a doctor as soon as possible.

The Mediterranean Diet: What The Greeks Know About Healthy Cuisine

Is there a painless way to lower cholesterol and lose weight? Can you eat your way there? Oh sure, you might say; but wait, consider the merits of the Mediterranean Diet. Virgin olive oil may be the perfect replacement for butter and margarine.

The Mediterranean Diet: What the Greeks Know about healthy cuisine

“If you have health, you probably will be happy, and if you have health and happiness, you have all the wealth you need, even if it is not all you want.” — Elbert Hubbard.

There are so many approaches to optimum wellness. Infomercials tell us about a variety of diet plans from pills and native plants to the benefits of liquid diets over conventional weight loss methods. What should you believe?

One of the clarion calls of caution is the old adage, “If it’s too good to be true – it probably is.”

The Mediterranean Diet relies solely on age old wisdom. Present research verification demonstrates that one man’s daily meal is another man’s trip to optimum wellness.

In Greece, certain symptoms of heart disease are among the lowest in the world. It would seem that the largest body of current scientific research indicates that a diet high in fruits and veggies along with routine consumption of whole grains, legumes, fish, low fat dairy products, olive oil and nuts provide long term and protective health benefits.

With the Mediterranean diet you will find that optimal health is even more important than the accompanying weight loss. What native Greek’s have intuitively known for centuries has now been linked to scientific data that shows adherence to common Mediterranean diet practices may result in a reduction in heart disease, increased life expectancy and reduced risk of some cancers. The health benefits of olive oil have long been realized in Greece.

The term “Mediterranean Diet” truly is a generic term because the diet in Greece remains varied. You will find influences from North Africa and Italy in many Greek dishes, however the island of Crete has proven a veritable treasure trove of health research. Residents of Crete have one of the lowest heart disease risks in the world.

Interestingly, western culture is looking into the health benefits found in countries like Greece, but many of the younger population in Greece are seeking out western cuisine. The trend has proven somewhat antithetical to the wellness experienced by older Greeks. While parents are consuming melons, stuffed tomatoes, salads and yogurt, the younger Greek generation are consuming cookies, hamburgers, French fries, pizza and pop. The result is an increase in obesity among Greek’s youth culture – researchers expect to see an accompanying rise in heart disease in the years to come.

With the Mediterranean diet, butter is replaced with the health benefits of olive oil, fast food lunches are replaced by a variety of fresh vegetables – snacks of chocolate and colas are replaced by fresh fruit and nuts.

Perhaps the reason you don’t hear as much about the Mediterranean diet as you might other weight loss plans is that there is no special pill to buy, no special formula to drink and no 12-step meal plan to purchase.

The Mediterranean diet works because common sense prevails in eating choices and a rise in HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) is an indicator they are doing something right. The health benefits of olive oil cannot be overstated and traditional Greek cooking utilizes garden fresh produce and extra virgin olive oil. In tandem, this common sense approach continues to see a lower incidence of heart disease and colon cancer along with an increase in life expectancy and a decrease in overall weight.

Aloe Vera

Out of the 400 species of the Aloe family, Aloe Vera (meaning True Aloe) has been used for thousands of years and is still present in varieties of medicines today. It is used predominantly as an herbal remedy for the skin, digestion, the reproductive system and detox. A gel or pulp can be extracted from the plants for many benefits, both externally and internally.

It is most commonly used to treat skin conditions by soothing the skin and easing pain and inflammation. It can even speed up the healing process of burns, eczema and other conditions. The plant’s gel can be rubbed to reduce redness after a couple of days. Rubbing the leaf over cuts in the skin can prevent infection and speed up the healing process by acting like a bandage. Because of its healing and moisturising benefits to the skin, it has been adopted by cosmetic companies and added in many products.

The juice of Aloe Vera can be extracted by cutting the leaf, collecting the juice and then evaporating it. The juice has many benefits when drunk. This is partially due to the fact that it contains twelve vitamins (including A, B1, B6, B12, C and E), nineteen amino acids and over 20 minerals, which most of these are essential to the body. In Ayurveda, the Indian health practice, Aloe Vera is known as Kumari (‘the princess’) because of its positive effect on the menstrual cycle and female reproductive system. It is also known for its ability to clean the liver and protect the digestive system by reducing intestinal inflammation.

Overall, Aloe Vera can be used for cosmetics and healing the skin, or when consumed, as a potent cleansing and rejuvenating tonic that is very nutrient rich and beneficial to the body. You can buy Aloe Vera juice at my store, Vigo Vitamins . It is made only from the unfiltered inner gel of the whole plant, not the outer rind, which means less processing and more active ingredients are retained.

Illegal Fruit: The Miraculous Mangosteen

The Southeast Asian fruit, the mangosteen (pronounced “mang-oh-steen”) has been prized for its healing properties and delectable flavor for centuries—but is illegal to import as a fresh fruit in the United States.

The pericarp, or rind, is where most of the powerful antioxidants and nutrients are found. While the rind is bitter, the fruit is sweet and tart. Ancient societies from China to India would boil the rind and drink it to treat ailments from arthritis to cancer. Today, to make the fruit easy to use and better tasting, the rind and the fruit or pulp are mixed together with other fruit juices to form a delicious drink, so health seekers can get the benefit of the rind in an easily absorbable form.

Currently the mangosteen fruit is not USDA approved for importation in its fresh form so it’s illegal to sell or buy—yet it’s coveted the world over for its dramatic healing properties. NOTE: As the fruit is not a drug it does not get assessed or approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). It is available—and legal—in dried and in juice form, but your body can’t assimilate the dried form either in capsules or in powder, so the juice is the effective way to go. The nutritional elements in the fruit aren’t harmed by freezing so you can get the full efficacy as it’s highly absorbable as liquid.

138 healing properties have been identified in mangosteen, also known by its Latin name, Garcinia Mangostana L., that have successfully treated an array of diseases for centuries. Xanthones, an antioxidant more powerful than any vitamin-5 times more powerful than vitamins C and E, have won praise from numerous research specialists for their medical potential. While virtually unheard of in the United States and Europe, mangosteen has been used for thousands of years in Chinese, Ayurvedic, and folk medicine throughout Asia. The mangosteen originated deep in the tropical rain forests of Southeast Asia in countries like Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand, and also in areas of South America and Puerto Rico.

Today, the pulp, its dried rind, leaves, and bark are used throughout Asia and India in a variety of products ranging from ointments to poultices. It can be applied externally as well as taken internally. (One friend’s daughter used it for acne, another for scrapes and cuts. Another friend applies it to cancerous growths on his face). There are no findings to indicate that drinking too much juice has any negative effects, since it’s all natural and there are no known side-effects. Mangosteen is similar to other exotic fruits in that it has been traditionally used as a health supplement. But the benefits of the mangosteen fruit also help control pain, reduce fever, increase energy and stave off bacterial and viral infections as well as to help protect against disease.

Mangosteen is used to treat skin disorders, eczema, diabetes, diarrhea, urinary disorders, joint pain, obesity and more. In the United States and Europe, mangosteen is thought to alleviate everything from depression to Parkinson’s (it is believed that the actor Michael J. Fox has benefited from it), cancer to heart disease.

Currently, several leading drug companies are experimenting with extracting and isolating certain Xanthones believed to treat cancer so they can turn them into patented synthetic drugs. It’s not known at this point whether it is possible, as its thought that it’s the combination of these powerful Xanthones working together that create such dramatic healing effects.

While the list of mangosteen benefits is extensive, many people drink it just for its delicious taste. Descriptions of what the mangosteen fruit tastes like vary. Perhaps the most enticing and racy description is by New York Times’ food critic R.W. “Johnny” Apple who says it’s “moist, fragrant, snow-white segments of ambrosial flesh” tasting “so delicate that it melts in the mouth like ice cream.” Gourmet magazine’s David Karp, only slightly less prosaic says, it’s “exquisite sweet-tart.” As I drink the juice daily, I’d call it both full-bodied (like a fine wine) with hints of sweet and tart raspberry flavor. The juice I drink has no added sugars, but is blended with other fruit juices so the nutrients of the rind are preserved without sacrificing flavor for health.

Getting Pregnant – How to Improve your Fertility

Are you finding it difficult to become pregnant? If so you can do many simple things to improve your chances of conception, the way we live can have a big effect on the reproductive system of both men and women.

You may both have to change your life-style to incorporate healthy influences, and eliminate things you enjoy that reduce your fertility.

Increasing your fertility outcome is something you can both do for unexplained infertility. You can make sure you and your partner are eating healthily, and eliminate habits that may lower your chances of conceiving.

You can make sure your weight is within the range that is helpful for conceiving.

You can make sure you incorporate a regular gentle exercise programme into your daily life such as walking; cycling or swimming, being fit and active is beneficial for fertility.

Stress

Stress can have a big effect on fertility. Stress hormones affect the hypothalamus and pituitary glands and reproductive organs. In women under stress, the reproductive hormone prolactin is over-produced and this can interfere with ovulation. The hypothalamus stops secreting gonadotrophin hormone, which in turn will affect the release of both the luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. As these hormones stimulate ovulation – fertility is affected.

Self help for stress is regular exercise, deep breathing techniques, hypnotherapy and visualization – we use a combined approach at the Hypnospot clinic for the treatment of infertility:

* Nutrition

* Acupuncture

* Hypnotherapy

Fertility is a whole-body event, not something that happens just in our reproductive organs – that is why we use a holistic approach. There may be a need for more fertility awareness and lifestyle changes to improve the chances of starting the pregnancy, or there may be a need for nutritional supplements, relaxation and de-stressing techniques, acupuncture, and massage.

Alcohol

Alcohol can jeopardize pregnancy. According to some studies, the risk of miscarriage appears to increase with moderate drinking during the first three months of pregnancy, particularly in the first weeks.

Smoking

Women who smoke are more likely to take longer to conceive, they have an increased risk of miscarriage, and lower oestrogen and progesterone levels.

Men who smoke are likely to have decreased sperm density, less motile sperm, reduced testosterone, and an increase in abnormal sperm.

These risks for both men and women increase with the number of cigarettes smoked.

Nutrition

You should not overlook nutrition in fertility treatment – it is important to have a good level of nourishment that will allow your body to function well.

Bad eating habits can lower the reserves of nutrients that are necessary for reproductive hormone systems to work properly.

Your hormonal balance and fertility are affected by what you eat, your nutrient levels and how well your digestion works.

If you are short of essential fatty acids, vitamin A, vitamin B6, zinc, magnesium, and antioxidants, then your hormone production may be blocked – resulting in an imbalance that makes conception less likely.

Acupuncture

Have you ever wondered about the treatment of infertility with traditional medicine and acupuncture?

Good candidates for trying medical acupuncture are people who have unexplained infertility – acupuncture is effective for balancing the body’s energies and raising the receptiveness of the body for conception.

Men and women with a physical problem, such as damaged fallopian tubes, or a low sperm count, would be encouraged to try acupuncture in addition to their medical treatment.

When skilfully applied, acupuncture is effective in correcting many of the imbalances that underlie the complex physical and hormonal disorders that lead to a reduction in fertility.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is exceptionally beneficial for unexplained infertility.

Hypnotherapists are already using Hypnotherapy to help women give birth peacefully, and teaching them that a normal birth should be a calm and natural process.

At the Hypnospot Clinic we teach simple but specialised relaxation, and breathing, and other techniques, making the whole birth easier and more comfortable.

With unexplained infertility, hypnotherapists do the same sort of thing, teaching you to let go of the stress you have been holding on to, using specialised relaxation, and breathing techniques.

Hypnotherapy teaches you to let go of any emotional blocks or worries you may have that can create infertility issues – Hypnotherapy can help you identify and process emotional issues that might be interfering with conception.

In addition to dealing with deep-seated fears, hypnotherapy is effective in stress reduction, and this in turn allows for hormonal rebalancing. This has been seen in cases where there is too much prolactin being produced which can inhibit ovulation.

In a relaxed environment at our clinic, we work together to bring about positive attitudes and beliefs.

It is very useful in enabling clients to imagine and create positive outcomes – from being able to see themselves pregnant to being able to visualize embryos embedding while undergoing egg harvesting or implantation in IVF.

You can give your unconscious mind free rein here and allow yourself to be creative, free, and prepared to follow your heart’s wishes.

Introduction to Meditation

Meditation has been practiced throughout the world for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. It is generally accepted that the practice originated within the Eastern religions, more particularly within Vedic Hinduism. The chief aim of meditation is to allow the individual to discover a place of inner peace and quiescence. It is a form of personal and spiritual development that acts to free one’s mind from the trappings of the physical plain of existence.

In many cases, the act of meditation is an effort to reacquaint oneself with the higher powers. The motivation behind the act of meditation differs from person to person, but it would appear that meditation is performed in a way similar to prayer in western religions. The notion of becoming closer to one’s God plays a significant role in most forms of meditation.

In modern times, there has been a significant change in the way individual’s approach meditation. Meditation has always been intimately connected to the principles of religion and spirituality. In the west, one gets the sense that practitioners of meditation have little connection to the major organized religions. Meditation, in a sense, has supplanted religion as a way to stay connected with the higher powers.

While meditation has become extremely popular outside of the hierarchy of the church and faith, it is generally accepted that it still exists within the realm of spirituality and ethics. One common thread between modern practitioners of meditation would appear to be the notion of living an ethical lifestyle. In essence, this refers to the ability of the individual to exemplify their internal, spiritual insights in their external, material life.

Meditation has shown to have incredible benefits for committed practitioners. Many people have reported improved concentration, self-discipline, and awareness as a consequence their meditative practices. It has also been known to induce a sense of calm, inner peace and harmony. From a health and fitness perspective, meditation has the ability to relieve stress, and to assist with proper cardiovascular and respiratory function.

Meditation may not be for everyone. But for those individuals that are motivated to make some positive changes in their lives, Meditation may be the key to unlocking the potential within. Do not be eager to dismiss the claims made above. Do some research, and talk to your friends and family. There is a good chance that somebody you know has benefited from meditative practice. It could help you, too.

Antioxidants

Free radicals are compounds naturally produced in the body. They contain one or more unpaired electrons, or electrical charges, and are therefore unstable. To achieve stability, free radicals borrow or steal electrons from stable compounds. This process allows formerly stable compounds to become reactive and cause the oxidation that may interfere with normal cell function and possibly mutate cells.

Peroxides are among the free radicals that are byproducts formed when fat molecules react with oxygen. Free radicals are also formed by radiation and are present in air pollution, ozone and cigarette smoke. Other examples of oxidation are the rusting of iron and the browning of apples and lettuce left exposed to the air. Oxidation also occurs when cooking fats become rancid.

In a six month study at the Washington University School of Medicine, 11 young men were given supplemental antioxidants consisting of 600 International Units of vitamin E, 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C, and 30 milligrams of beta carotene daily. A nine man control group was given a placebo supplement. After running for 35 minutes on a treadmill at the beginning and of the end of the study, free radical production was measured in each group. The vitamin users produced 17 to 36 percent fewer free radicals than the control group.

Considerations Of A Vegetarian Diet

Our society is set up to regard meat eating as the ‘norm’. Those people who choose a vegetarian diet are often thought of as difficut, ‘trying to be different’ or just odd. A common nutritional fallacy is that meat and animal products must be consumed in order to maintain a well-balanced, healthy diet.

Many people these days are finding out the many health benefits of a vegetarian diet. Additionally, many physicians and nutritionalists are prescribing and endorsing plant-based meals in order to promote health, prevent and treat certain diseases, and even to reduce weight. There are many products now becoming available in shops and supermarkets that contain health enhancing plant extracts. These are mixed in yoghurts, spreads and cheeses, to specifically lower cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, enhance energy levels and boost immune systems. Who knows what other benefits are just around the corner in plant extracts.

Although vegetarianism may seem like a modern idea, in reality, its health benefits have been known for many years in cultures around the world. India and the far east make up the largest percentage of the world’s vegetarians, both for health and spiritual reasons. One group of people, the Hunza, who live near the Himalaya’s have a diet which is exclusively vegetarian. Members of their community reportedly often live to be over 100 years of age.

The American Dietetic Association say that the benefits of a vegetarian diet can include;

Lower cholesterol levels
Lower levels of saturated fats
Lower body fat
Reduced rates of heart disease
Lower blood pressure
Lower incidence of type-2 diabetes
Lower instances of certain cancers
Higher levels of important minerals and antioxidant vitamins

Obesity is one of the major health concerns in the western world. It can be addressed with a vegetarian diet, one that eliminates excess protein and animal fat consumption, and increases fiber in the form of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Those who consume a vegetarian diet tend to maintain a lower body mass index (BMI), which significantly aids in the treatment and management of other chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. A lower BMI is an aim of anyone looking to improve their general health, whether by diet, exercise, or preferably both.

One question often asked by those considering a vegetarian diet is; “Will I get enough protein? This is certainly a valid question, as protein is necessary for the building, maintenance and function of all body cells. In fact, a varied and well-balanced vegetarian diet actually provides all the protein the body needs, obtained by eating such things as whole grains, beans, nuts and soy products.

In fact, meat-based diets typically provide an excess of protein, which may actually be harmful. High protein levels can put more strain on the kidneys. A leading gerontological journal reports that too much protein can cause a person to lose about 30% of their kidney function by the time they reach old age. It can also cause systemic acidity, which the body attempts to counter by leeching calcium out of the bones, which can lead to osteoporosis.

Becoming a vegetarian does not mean you are limited to eating carrots, fruit and nuts. There are many types of vegetarians that eat meatless diets in a variety of combinations. Some of the more common types include;

Lacto vegetarians, who do not eat meat or eggs, but do eat dairy products such as milk and cheese.

Lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat meat, but will eat dairy products and eggs.

Ovo vegetarians do not eat meat or dairy products, but will eat eggs.

Vegans do not eat meat, dairy products, eggs, or any animal products at all.

There are many medical and health organizations that promote, endorse, and support people on a path toward changing their dietary lifestyle to one that includes more plant-based foods. There is a lot of information on the internet, as well as through medical providers and vegetarian organizations. Numerous books and articles are easily found.

Many restaurants, grocery stores and supermarkets now provide meals and products to vegetarians, making it simpler to choose this healthy lifestyle.

Remember that at the end of the day it is your decision. If you want to simply keep eating a little meat, while exploring deeper into the vegetarian side, then do that. Don’t worry about the ‘purists’. There is no law to say you cannot eat a little meat, fish or chicken along the way – it’s your life and your choice. Once you start eating more vegetarian food though, many people find they start to lose their taste for meat. The main thing is to enjoy the food and feel healthier by doing so.

On a final note, consider using either all organic vegetables and fruit, or at least as much as you can source. Organic produce really makes a great deal of difference to the taste and texture, and you have the security of mind that what you are eating is free of pesticides and other chemicals. More information on this will be found in the next article, or on our web site.

Integrating Alternative Medicine and Conventional Medicine

Until recently, there has been a battle between proponents of alternative medicine and believers in conventional medicine. It seemed that to back one was to deny the other. This is no longer the case. An increasingly knowledgeable public is aiming for health and wellness, a more general term that recognises that both conventional medicine and alternative medicine have something to offer. These two fields now create a whole new medical approach.

What is conventional medicine?

Conventional medicine is used to describe the services that treat the symptoms of a disease or illness with prescribed medications and surgeries. Conventional medicine treats the ailing part of the body but may not address the underlying causes of the illness or disease. This area of medicine is what is practiced in hospitals and most doctor’s offices in the Western world. Backed by the FDA and multiple scientific studies, conventional medicine is highly regulated for the benefit of the patient.

What is alternative medicine?

An alternative form of treatment to conventional medicine, alternative medicine attempts to treat the patient as a whole – the mind, spirit, and body – to prevent diseases and illnesses from occurring and creating a better overall quality of life rather than just a body free of symptoms. Because it acknowledges that the patient’s physical health is directly affected by state of mind and spiritual health, alternative medicine offers preventative treatments that are often relaxing and non-invasive.

Can conventional medicine co-exist with alternative medicine?

Increasingly, more and more people would like to believe so and are introducing alternative therapies, such as massage therapy and energy balancing, into their daily lives. When sick, these people may still go back to their western allopathic medicine for speedy recovery.

In fact, “integrative medicine” is the term coined for which the scientific and objectivity of conventional medicine is complemented with the subjective, more personal dynamics of alternative medicine. It is a new movement that is driven by consumers, that is, patients who demand

higher standards of health; in short, total wellness. In addition to providing the best conventional care, integrative medicine focuses on preventive lifestyle measures. These lifestyle measures include diet, exercise, stress management, and emotional well-being. However, as it is still evolving, more needs to be investigated into precisely what “integrative medicine” stands for and what it advocates.

In the meantime, for anyone, it is important to understand the principles of each area of medicine. Only then, can one benefit from making a wise choice in terms of one’s health and wellness.

Apnea, in terms of the Greek word, is defined as “without breath.” This is exactly what happens to individuals who suffer from sleep apnea, which is a serious medical condition that causes the sufferer to completely stop breathing on more than one occasion throughout the night.

While it may be difficult to realize the symptoms of sleep apnea because they occur during sleep, it is possible if you know what to watch for. For instance, you may notice uncommon exhaustion throughout the day, a general feeling of fatigue, frequent or long-lasting headaches or irritability. These symptoms occur due to lack of sleep, which is caused by sleep apnea. In addition, if your spouse notices intense snoring or long pauses between breaths at night, you may be suffering from sleep apnea.

The only person who can positively identify sleep apnea is a licensed physician. He or she may ask a series of question or, in some instances, recommend a sleep study by asking you to spend the night in a supervised sleep center. At this type of facility, the purpose is to determine whether or not you suffer from sleep apnea. A series of monitoring devices will be placed on your body in order to detect your breathing patterns throughout the night.

Sleep apnea, when left untreated, can be extremely dangerous. In fact, it can lead to heart disease, a stroke or other major health problems. In addition to the obvious health risks, sleep apnea may lessen your immune system’s ability to fight disease or the loss of sleep can cause you to be impaired when driving. Sleep apnea treatments may include sleeping on your side instead of your back, giving up alcohol and cigarettes, ridding your home of allergens, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise program or the use of a doctor recommended at-home apnea treatment.

A product known as the Sleep Genie, which is a doctor recommended anti-snoring device, is available to help provide comfort to those with sleep apnea. Manufactured of a comfortable nylon lycra blend, the Sleep Genie comfortably supports the jaw while keeping the mouth closed to prevent snoring. While the Sleep Genie is not intended as a cure for sleep apnea, many users find additional comfort when using this product with the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, which provides continuous air pressure to help prevent the collapse of tissue in the throat that often blocks air passages during sleep. Users of the CPAP machine need to sleep with their mouth closed in order to prevent the air from escaping, which is where the Sleep Genie often proves beneficial.

Health Services’ Excessive Prescription of Medications

Many people have started to become disillusioned with the health services and the seemingly excessive prescription of medication. Alternative medicine, formerly the mainstay of the hippy or green individual, is now becoming more appealing to the mainstream and is indeed encouraged by some medical professionals in addition to conventional medicine.

For certain symptoms, alternative medicine can prove very beneficial. Holistic therapies are also good for personal wellbeing in addition to aiding in the recovery of certain physical ailments.

For muscular aches, massage is a widely recognised treatment. Many are not aware that it is a form of alternative medicine or that there are various types of massage available dependent on the location and type of injury.

Sports Massage is most commonly used for those with muscle damage caused during sporting pursuits. To qualify as a sports masseur requires extensive study and a good knowledge of human biology in relation to muscles, bones, joint and ligaments. This is because in these cases there is often actual damage to the muscles, such as tears or strains. In order to help them heal they must be massaged correctly with this knowledge at the forefront of the masseur’s mind to prevent further damage. An uninformed masseur has the potential to make the problem worse if they do not know exactly how to treat the specific problem.

Swedish Body Massage is most commonly used to treat general muscle aches and pains. A good masseur would assess the patient prior to treatment and evaluate the extent of the problem and if they felt it was due to in injury rather than just a stiffness or tension, would refer the patient to a Sports Massage specialist. However, if the problem is not serious a Swedish Body Massage can release tension and nodules in the muscles and is tailored to the area of the body where the problem lies. Usually the massage is offered as either a full or half body and the patient can choose which they prefer. The specific area of discomfort will then be concentrated on with the rest of the body being treated to a general massage in addition. This treatment is also great for personal well-being as it can promote general relaxation, as well as the easing of any muscular pain. For many who receive the treatment it is purely for its benefits for the soul and as a treat and not for any particular medical concern.

Indian Head Massage is more specialised as it concentrates on a smaller part of the body. However, it is not just a treatment for the head as the name suggests. These massages work on the head, face, neck, upper back and shoulders and are the most widely used to treat shoulder ache associated with sitting in front of a computer all day. This treatment can also help with those suffering from migraine, sinus problems or stress.

All of these treatments carry no associated risks with them, provided they are carried out by a qualified professional. However, there are things you can do and expect to feel immediately afterwards and over the next couple of days. This can include an increase in muscle ache before it gets better, tiredness and in some cases, headache. It is always advisable to drink a lot of water, however the masseur should advise you of what to do and expect at the time of the treatment.

What Are Some Natural Hypoglycemia Treatments?

Hypoglycemia is a condition where there is low blood sugar. Symptoms of this include anxiety, trembling, heart palpitations, sweating, and dilated pupils. Many symptoms can occur or become more severe after eating. It is important to consult a physician if these symptoms are present to rule out more serious complications. However, there are many natural ways to reduce effects and control the condition.

A healthy diet is essential in treating hypoglycemia. Eliminating sugar from the diet, or greatly reducing it proves to have positive results. This includes candy, cookies, pastries and other types of sweets commonly eaten. Care should also be taken to reduce the amount of alcohol and caffeine intake. Choose foods high in complex carbohydrates and high in fiber. It is also important to eat regularly at the same time each day. Do not skip meals or delay meals unnecessarily. Foods with artificial sweeteners can also prove damaging, and reducing the amount of this type of food will benefit greatly. Get in the habit of reading the labels on food products to avoid hidden ingredients.

Use of nutritional supplements will also alleviate symptoms of hypoglycemia. Chromium, fish oil and magnesium have been proven good dietary supplements. Chromium is especially recommended as a diet supplement. Also, selenium and N-acetyl cysteine are recommended. Vitamin additions to the diet may be helpful. The most common vitamin recommendation is niacinamide. Alternately, add the use of a multivitamin.

There are psychological conditions that may cause the onset of hypoglycemia and it is important to reduce those factors. Ensure a full night’s sleep is attained as sleeplessness can aggravate symptoms. Learning relaxation techniques will also help. Try meditation or other calming exercises to reduce stress levels. Learn to control the rhythm of breathing in case of distress. This calming ability will help offset any ill effects.

Being active and exercising is a valuable health benefit. Not only does it keep the body healthy and reduce possible effects of hypoglycemia, it also is a relaxation technique. Do not overdo it, however. Exercise at a comfortable level several times per week, employing aerobic fitness such as walking, using a treadmill or bicycling.

Hypoglycemia is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. The numbers are rising steadily with more people eating foods high in sugar. This condition is easily controlled, though, with the use of proper diet, exercise and supplements. Small changes in lifestyle can greatly reduce the ill effects of hypoglycemia symptoms.

A Look at Alternative Medicine and Conventional Medicine

Alternative medicine and alternative therapies are therapeutic practices, which are currently not considered as an integral part of conventional medicine. Conventional medicine is the current mainstream medical system of diagnosis and treatment of disease.

However, an increasing desire for wellness, in response to today’s stressful lifestyle and rising incidences of cancer, disease and illness, has led to the rising demand for alternative medicine and therapies. It is true that many people are becoming disenchanted with conventional medicine’s drugs and the approach to healing.

What is the difference between conventional medicine and alternative medicine? In general, conventional medicine tends to focus on the disease and employs techniques to treat it. It views the body as a war zone where battles against invading organisms are fought, and won or lost. It focuses more on techniques, technology, chemical reactions that can be measured, statistically proven and documented. Treatment is on the part of the body that is displaying the symptoms of the illness or disease.

On the other hand, alternative medicine tends to be “holistic”, where an individual’s health is considered as a whole and treatment not just focused on the symptoms. Alternative medicine employ “natural” methods to aid the healing powers of the body to return to a state of health. Treatment is holistic; that is it takes into account every aspect of a patient and not just on the health symptoms that he or she is experiencing.

Contrary to popular belief, alternative medicine has a history longer than conventional medicine. Much of alternative medicine is derived from ancient healing techniques. For instance, the use of herbs is practiced all over the world since a long time ago; whether in India as ayurvedic medicine, in China as traditional Chinese medicine or used as aromatherapy which can be traced back to ancient Egyptian times.

There are a full range of alternative medicine and complementary therapies. They include acupuncture, energy healing, hypnosis, flower essences therapy, EFT, homeopathy, etc – all aimed at restoring the body back to balance and thus helping an individual achieve total wellness.

It would seem that after the above explanations, alternative medicine is superior to conventional medicine. This will not be an accurate view for all health situations.

Conventional medicine, does in fact, have a place in health treatment. Conventional medical interventions such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and antibiotics do bring benefits. They can prevent death, pain and give hope to people to walk again, provide instant relief, and also, provide a new functioning organ in place of a diseased and ailing one.

Also, alternative practitioners do not condemn conventional medical practices altogether. Their belief is somewhat different, however. That these conventional medical interventions should not be the first choice of treatment, as it often is. The point is that most tend to seek natural or alternative medicine as the last resort. Seeking holistic treatment as a last ditch for health and life is not a very good idea as alternative medicine takes a long time to show positive healing benefits.

For the general public, I guess it is important to realize that there are more ways than one in the aspect of health. Fortunately, with the advent of the holistic health movement over the last two decades, a growing number of conventional doctors are now recognizing that health is more than the absence of disease.

Many more medical doctors practice “integrative” medicine, where they combine research-backed alternative medical treatments with the best of conventional allopathic medicine. This may just be the best way to go. The overall objective to aim in the environment of today and tomorrow is for a higher standard of health; in short, total wellness.

Genital Warts Can Be Treated By Medical Professionals

No matter what kind of condition it is, coming down with a sexually transmitted infection is perhaps one of the most embarrassing and disconcerting experiences a human can face. In the case of genital warts, however, the condition is very treatable and the spread of the infection can be controlled if people with the infection seek medical advice and take steps to avoid passing the condition on to others.

Genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus, which is also called HPV. This is perhaps the most common cause of sexually transmitted infection going and is responsible for a number of different conditions. In fact, there are more than 100 different types and most of them are harmless. Some forms of HPV can cause genital warts, which are bumps that generally manifest in the genital areas of men and women.

Genital warts themselves are the most easy to recognize sign of the HPV infection, however, most people have the infection without getting the warts. If they appear, they are typically soft and fleshy in coloring. They will show up within a few weeks after an infection and can be raised or flat, big or small and they can even appear in clusters. In women, they are found on the vulva and cervix and inside and around the vagina and anus. For men, the symptoms typically show up on the scrotum or penis. Sometimes they will appear on the thighs or groin of a person as well.

Although they are treatable, genital warts are quite contagious. They can be spread during any type of sex with an infected partner. Skin-to-skin contact is where the problem is and for those who have had this contact with an infected partner, the warts will typically appear within a few months of contact.

Aside from the warts, however, there really aren’t other symptoms of the infection.

For those who have visible warts or suspect they may be infected, seeing a doctor is the most important first step in treatment. For women, doctors will often do a Pap smear test or take a tiny sample of tissue for testing. For men, tissue testing is often the route that’s taken to make a diagnosis.

Once a diagnosis has been made, a doctor can treat the warts, but unfortunately there is no known cure for HPV. There are medications or removal methods available to get rid of the outbreak, but it’s also known the warts themselves will sometimes go away without any treatment.

Since the infection itself doesn’t go away, it is possible warts will return even after surgical removal, however.

The only way to avoid getting HPV is to avoid contact with the virus. Latex condoms are known to reduce the chance for getting HPV but they have not proven to be effective all of the time.

Typically if someone is diagnosed with genital warts, a wait and see type approach can be taken. If the warts fail to go away, treatments can be used to get rid of the outbreak.

Essential Principles of Vitamin A

Vitamin A was given the first letter of the alphabet for a name because it was the first vitamin to be discovered. It was found that vitamin A has a large number of uses in the body including keeping eyes healthy, aiding cell growth and also helping boost the immune system. Nevertheless, vitamin A is not only absorbed directly but it is also created by the body by converting beta carotene into vitamin A.

Vitamin A itself is found in a number of foods such as eggs, milk, liver and meat. Beta carotene that the body can convert into vitamin A is found in many fruits and vegetables, especially the red, orange and green coloured ones. The most important point to remember that consuming too much pure vitamin A can be toxic. It is essential not to exceed the recommended daily allowance for vitamin A.

The actual recommended allowance of vitamin A varies depending on a person’s age, sex and other factors. While the actual amount of vitamin A consumed may be toxic if the recommended daily allowance is exceeded, there is a far higher limit to how much beta carotene can be consumed. Therefore it is advisable to concentrate on obtaining the greatest amount of beta carotene which the body can then convert to vitamin A, rather than consuming vast quantities of pure vitamin A rich foods.

Many people will remember being told that eating lots of carrots helps you to see in the dark and that is down to the vitamin A that is produced from the high levels of beta carotene that are found in the vegetables. Other foods which have high levels of beta carotene that can be converted to vitamin A include tomatoes and dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach. Beta carotene is not only used to form vitamin A, but it is also a powerful antioxidant in itself.

None of the beta carotene that is absorbed is wasted as any excess after conversion to vitamin A has taken place is used to fight the harmful free radicals within the body. Vitamin A also helps fight infections and illnesses by helping tissues that line various parts of the body, including the eyes, mouth, nose, throat and lungs, to grow and also to repair them if they are damaged to prevent infection. Children also need plenty of vitamin A to help their bones and teeth to develop properly.

How To Lose Weight With Acupuncture – TCM Weight Loss Program

In recent years, more and more people are trying out acupuncture to lose weight. Just what is acupuncture? How can acupuncture treatment help you lose weight?

Acupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and has been around for about 5,000 years. It is the practice of inserting very thin needles to stimulate pathways or meridians in the body to treat many illnesses and diseases especially to relieve pain from chronic disorders.

Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners or TCM physicians claim that acupuncture can help you to lose body fat by making you feel full and so will eat less. This curbs excess caloric consumption in the patient treated with acupuncture and is a great help in the patient’s weight loss program.

Acupuncture treatment can also be used to raise your metabolic rate and help you to burn more calories to speed up weight loss. Some Chinese medicine practitioners say that acupuncture stimulates the production of a hormone called endorphins and this hormone helps to lower body fat, insulin and lipid levels in the bloodstream thus less insulin is converted into body fat.

Acupuncture is not a miracle cure for obesity. TCM physicians often stress that to achieve good weight loss results from your program and maintaining your weight, acupuncture treatment alone is not enough. To lose weight effectively and keep the fats off permanently, acupuncture treatment must be combined with healthy eating habits and regular exercises.

Before you begin your acupuncture treatment, your Chinese physician will conduct a medical examination on you by checking your pulse and examination of your tongue to ensure that you are suitable for acupuncture weight loss treatment. This is because TCM is a holistic branch of health care and do not just specifically target the ailment or medical complaint. So an investigation into other reasons why a patient is obese is necessary to solve the problem holistically.

If you want to lose weight naturally and without drugs, why not try TCM acupuncture for your weight loss program?

What Causes Asthma?

Asthma is chronic disease that is hallmarked by the inflammation of the bronchial or breathing tubes, in the lungs. While there is no known specific cause for the condition, many of its triggers are well known and avoidable; and those that can’t be avoided can be well managed.

15 million adults and 5 million children in the United Stated have asthma, a chronic respiratory disease that can cause early morning or late night coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, fatigue, anxiety and shortness of breath. Asthma symptoms can be mild or serious, and they can also be life threatening during an asthma attack.

Our lungs are filled with hollow tube like passages that resemble the branches on a tree. These passages gradually become smaller and smaller ending in tiny pockets where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged. For those with asthma, swelling in the hollow tubes makes breathing difficult and uncomfortable by preventing the air from moving freely. This inflammation causes an increased sensitivity to allergens and a host of other asthma triggers.

So what causes asthma? It is generally believed that exposure to allergens early in life can trigger asthma, but heredity plays a role too and can predispose certain populations to this chronic condition. Allergen induced asthma usually becomes apparent before the age of 35. Non allergic asthma usually has its onset in middle age and can be triggered or worsened by reflux disease, exercise, weather changes and illness.

Environmental lung irritants are by far the biggest culprits in triggering asthma problems and include cleaning products, perfume, smoke, mold, dust, pollution, mildew, seasonal pollen and animal dander.

Lifestyle and illness also play a role in causing respiratory flare-ups in those susceptible.
Stress, exercise, laughter, foods and food additives like sulfites, getting a cold, the flu or a bronchial infection, and even changes in the weather can bring the asthmatic closer to an asthma attack.

Luckily for asthmatics many of the factors that can lead to an asthma attack can be eliminated or reduced in their lives. Keeping the environment clean and dust free to avoid exposure to mold, mildew and dust mites, avoiding pets and smoke, staying inside on windy days and always riding in the car with the windows up to avoid excessive amounts of pollen, avoiding exposure to household chemicals and perfumed body products, and running a dehumidifier on humid days can all help to reduce the causes of environmental allergen triggers. Reducing stress, increasing exercise and working to stay healthy are necessary additional steps to managing asthma.

Asthma is on the rise in the United States and in other developed countries around the globe; and though no one knows exactly why, it is theorized that the culprits may be a byproduct of our more industrialized lives. People spend more time indoors where household pollutants are greater, and though environments are generally healthier, with less exposure to viruses and bacteria our immune systems may be becoming more sensitive to these issues.

There is no cure for asthma, but medication, and environmental and lifestyle changes can help to alleviate the symptoms and keep asthma from limiting the lives of those afflicted.

20 million people in the United Stated have asthma, a chronic respiratory disease that makes it impossible for them to take breathing for granted.

Our lungs are filled with hollow tube like passages that resemble the branches on a tree. These passages gradually become smaller and smaller ending in tiny pockets where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged. For those with asthma, swelling in the hollow tubes that fill the lungs makes breathing difficult and uncomfortable. This inflammation causes an increased sensitivity to allergens and a host of other asthma triggers like exercise, medications, stress, pollution, humidity and even laughter.

There is no cure for asthma, but medication, and environmental and lifestyle changes can help to alleviate the symptoms and keep asthma from limiting the lives of those afflicted.

The symptoms of asthma vary from person to person; early morning or late night coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, fatigue, anxiety and shortness of breath are all common. Allergen induced asthma usually becomes apparent before the age of 35. Non allergic asthma usually has its onset in middle age and can be triggered or worsened by reflux disease, exercise, weather changes and illness.

So who gets asthma? It is generally believed that exposure to allergens early in life can trigger asthma, and the rapid rise in the disease among children is cause for concern, but heredity plays a role too and can predispose certain populations to this chronic condition. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology children with a genetic predisposition are 40% more likely to develop the disease than those without the hereditary link. There isn’t anything that can be done to remove the heredity factor for asthma, but the disease is highly treatable.

When it comes to asthma, the best first line treatment is always lifestyle and environmental changes. Removing the influences that can trigger asthma related symptoms is the best first course of action. Keeping the environment clean and dust free to avoid exposure to mold, mildew and dust mites, avoiding pets and smoke, staying inside on windy days, always riding in the car with the windows up, avoiding exposure to household chemicals and perfumed body products, and running a dehumidifier on humid days can all help with specific environmental allergen triggers.

Prescription medications, or combinations of medications, are valuable tools in treating the symptoms of asthma. Bronchodilators are short acting medicines that help to open the breathing passageways of the lungs by relaxing them, while steroids are longer acting and help to decrease the swelling in the tissues lining the lungs. These medications come in the form of pills and inhalers and can be used with other medications to develop the right regimen for each individual patient.

Asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease with symptoms that can range from mild to serious, and can even become life threatening during a severe asthma attack, but asthma is also highly treatable. With the right combination of lifestyle, environmental and medical treatment, asthmatics can live healthy and active lives.

And then to have the opportunity to buy Acuvue Advance online is just pure genius.

How To Become An Alternative Medicine Provider

Healing through alternative medicine is a broad subject, traditionally referred to as practices and applications not usually taught by conventional or western medical schools as treatment for illnesses. Alternative medicine is typically not covered by health insurance, although acupuncture, massage, and chiropractic have recently gotten the go ahead. For those of you interested in becoming alternative medicine providers, the practice is divided into seven major categories: Bioelectricmagnetic applications-which include magnet therapy, diet, nutrition, and lifestyle changes (homeopathic practices), herbal medicine, manual healing, ( Chinese medicine, massage, acupuncture) and biological treatments.

Alternative medicine is meant to treat the body holistically-body, mind, and spirit, and is highly based on preventative practices. That is, Alt. med. is geared toward preventing rather than simply treating symptoms of ailments. Actually, only about 30% of the world uses what we call western or modern medicine. The other 70% use holistic or alternative medicine and Americans are just now catching up. The good news is that American doctors are beginning to see the benefits of alternative forms of therapy and more of them are beginning to add some form of alternative medicine to their practice. “Mainstream” doctors are beginning to refer patients for massage therapy, surgeons are referring to chiropractors. The result is that the terms ”mainstream” and “alternative” are beginning to blur.

Alternative medicine is being used along with other alternative therapies or traditional therapies (called “complimentary”) and reflects a shift in attitude. It seems people are much more accepting of alternative medicine if it is used in conjunction with conventional methods of treatment rather than as an “alternative” or “instead of.” Professional alternative medicine practitioners are trained by accredited schools and practice in established locations-no back alley medicine here-you must meet all the entry requirements of the holistic medicine schools and maintain excellent skills to become accredited. Each health care system has its own accreditation, and includes Traditional Oriental Medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, naturopathy, anthroposophy, and ayurvedic (Indian) medicine.

Each system has its own theory of illness (although if you study them separately you will see that they are very much the same indeed, which is another feather in alternative medicine’s cap-to have the same principles work on either end of the world), an educational plan to teach theory and practice, a support system and a legal and ethical committee to answer to. All have the need to restore balance as a common denominator. Homeopath medicine is used world wide, and involves natural animal, plant, and mineral substances. Practitioners of homeopath medicine usually are also accredited acupuncturists and are regulated by the food and drug administration. They treat acute and chronic diseases and into preventative therapies and promoting good health in order to prevent sickness. Homeopathy very much is able to combine modern medicine with natural and herbal care. Native American alternative medicine involves much sweating and expelling of toxins which cause imbalance and disease. This is achieved by the use of herbs and teas, and a lot of heat. Ceremonial dances and chants add to the mystical properties of the healing.

Or maybe you’re interested in working in the bioelectromagnetic field of alternative medicine. Working with magnets is growing in popularity as people are beginning to discover the benefits of wearing magnetic insoles in their shoes and sleeping on magnetically charged mattress pads. The magnets increase blood flow and bring about circulatory health which lessens back pain and headaches. Chances are you’ve decided to enter the world of alternative medicine because you’ve had a good experience with it. Your current health provider can help you research the area of your choice and give you advice as to how to proceed.
